‘Don’t let a “Greek Myth of Odysseus in the book of Homer” get into your computer’ – Discuss web and PC security here

PC Security

No doubt you have heard about the russian led hacks that have got into the US government computers and databases. Companies and individual users need good security on their PC computers. If your device(s) does not employ good security, you might fall victim to attacks, get your data and bank accounts compromised and worse, your identity stolen and used. So, don’t fall victim or become prey. Get ready with the latest security and become informed to keep things out!

  • Install a antivirus program

    Defender for windows
    Malwarebytes
    Webroot
    Avast

Make sure you turn on your PC 2 or 3 times a week and leave it on and plugged into power for at least 3 hours or more in the early morning to get latest antivirus updates and all latest security updates from Microsoft.

If you use linux or mac OS X, connect once a month and go to the respective updates website for your OS and download/update the software to the newer versions as mentioned online. In my automation section of the blog I may add more on automating this for linux and Mac OS.

  • Use good, hard to guess passwords

    example: $%@ThEGoodFight-!
At least 8 characters long, mixed case, use numbers letters and special characters.
  • Erase or lock accounts you don’t need on your PC

    Examples: Guest, loopback, mail etc

OS security

Most modern operating systems can let you change admin password to a more complex one, setup network settings like firewalls, port blocking and lists of allowed connections. Make sure these are all set to secure, especially if your computer connects directly to the internet without a router or external firewall.

Browser and file security

Don’t use old browsers and software. Erase them. Install or upgrade to Edge and the latest versions of IE, Firefox and Chrome.

Network level security

Enable firewalls. Set Public and Private firewalls to “On” or green status in windows. Mac, setup this in network preferences. On Linux, its under the firewall management properties in network firewall manager

Disable insecure ports. If you run internal web or email servers, make sure you disable ports that are insecure that face customers or the public. Developers are notorious for having insecure open ports. Disable ports: 80, 23, 25, 143 etc.

Accounts and login security

Most windows PC’s have 2 or 3 levels of accounts. Administrator, Guest and Local User.

Corporations have user accounts on networks that can have even more security levels. To install software and make changes to your computer, your account needs to be a Administrator in windows. There are 2 types of Administrator accounts. A local Administrator allows a local computer user to install apps and software. A second Admin user is called a Domain Administrator. Windows Domain Administrators can change yours and other PC’s in your network group, their update schedules and network security firewall and groups they all belong to. To see what your account type is, open control panel and browse to the User Accounts > User Accounts page:
